Relationship Reflection

Relationships are an important and necessary part of our lives. It is human nature to connect with others and form some type of bond rather they be platonic, romantic or just someone to bond with while in a work or school environment. Relationships are also common in families some of us have stronger connections and bonds with different members of our family and community members around us. Here are some of the stong and influential relationships in my life. Growing up all of us have people and friends who come and go. Then there are ones that you have around for the rest of your lives and they become someone you turn to for comfort, support, love, and encouragement.

Family

The first relationship I ever formed was to my mom and dad. Growing up I was an only child and was really close with my mom and dad. The only other family members we had near us were my grandparents. I saw these people as my role models, protectors, and most importantly learned about unconditional love from these family members.

Friends

The next kind of relationship I learned about was friendship. Here is a collection of my current friends. I met them in high school and college. I find that is challenging to keep friends from elementary school since they were from so long ago and the communication should've been constant throughout the years which it was not. Friendship is a different type of relationship from family and romantic partners. They are tricky some stay while others were just passing people you met in your life journey. It doesn't mean that the friends that were lost were toxic or negative relationships just not a constant unconditional love that I mentioned before with my parental bond. Long-lasting friends are an incredible source of support and love to have in your life. You both have seen each other grow and blossom into the amazing adults you are becoming today. Though fights and disagreements do occur you know at the end of the day you love them and they love you.

Romantic Relationship

I am leaving this one blank for now because I am still figuring out how these relationships work myself. I do not have enough experience and insight on this type of bond as I do with family and friends relationships.

Communication and Emotional Intelligence
Communication is key to forming any type of relationship. The timeless quote of "communication is a two-way street" is a classic and very important concept to grasp.  Many people are quick to blame the other person for a failed relationship however, it is crucial to see perspectives from another's point of view. Miscommunication is a constant in failed relationships and arguments that occur in relationships. It is always best to clarify and make sure you are fully understanding what the other person is saying before jumping into conclusions. This is why I make it my mission to teach children about empathy and caring for others so that they can form strong in healthy relationships in the future.

  1. Hello Kristen,
Thank you for sharing your personal relationships with your family and friends. I love your photos. I think that you are wise by saying that you have not yet figured out how to comment on romantic relationships. There are many types of romantic relationships and they take time to establish just which one is yours. Cynthia

  3. Kirsten,
I love that you left your Romantic Relationship status open. Relationships are hard and then throw feelings of love into the picture, and the whole thing gets mooshed up. At 36 years old, and in a relationship with someone who I thought cared about me for 15 years, I still feel like I do not have a good handle on how these relationships should go. I applaud your honesty! So glad we are on this journey together again!
